Home automation is on the rise globally, and Africa is quickly following suit. The reason is easy to understand, because with the Internet of Things (IoT), tomorrow's tech-savvy consumers can easily control energy efficiency, ensure safety and reduce their carbon footprint, all thanks to their palms.

"The world has ushered in the fourth industrial revolution, which has changed the way people manage their daily lives," explained Charl Osborne, head of the CBI-electric organization: Low Voltage, a local manufacturer of high-quality low-voltage power distribution, protection and control equipment business.

The company noticed that there is a gap in helping consumers manage electricity anytime and anywhere, so it launched Astute Range, which includes products made in South Africa such as Astute smart controllers, isolators, and smart plugs-all through the CBI Home app manage.

Today, IoT products are returning power to Africa. Here are five ways smart devices are revolutionizing home automation:

In the past, apart from choosing energy-efficient appliances, consumers had little control over their electricity consumption. Now they can proactively manage their own needs and easily schedule peak power consumption while reducing their environmental impact.

This can be done through the "set and forget" option, and the schedule is controlled by a smartphone or tablet. You can set up schedules for different days of the week and automate them based on time, weather conditions, etc. The power usage is shown in the daily chart and monthly usage on the app.

In order to maximize energy savings, smart devices can control the operating hours of power-consuming devices (such as air conditioners, geysers, and heaters) so that consumers can benefit from the comfort they provide while minimizing costs. In addition, unused appliances that are still plugged into the wall can still use electricity, which will cost consumers unnecessary money. Using smart devices, users can turn off these products with the palm of their hands to ensure that they do not waste money on unused electricity.

Smart devices provide greater convenience. The CBI Home App allows consumers to control when the device is powered on, with settings including weather and time of day. When no one is at home, the air conditioner can be turned off remotely, or it can be operated only in warmer conditions.

Later, consumers can also use smart devices to automate their homes or turn off geysers on vacation.

Many people may worry about whether they have turned off heaters, irons, and electric blankets when they leave home. Now they can use the app to see if these appliances are still on, and effectively turn them off on the wall when necessary.

For home safety, users can also take preventive measures by turning on the lights when needed.

The Astute device allows multiple opening and closing procedures, and has a manual bypass function for maximum control.

As the product works with the installed electrical infrastructure, Astute Range provides an economical and practical solution. However, these products allow people to decide which product to install first according to their needs without increasing the cost of installing the equipment. For example, if they want to solve the most serious power consumption problem first.

Astute Range's smart IoT products can be managed through the CBI Home app, which is available on the App Store and Google Play. This allows energy to be monitored, controlled and dispatched with the push of a button. The only requirement to use the Astute series is a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with internet connection and a smartphone or tablet.
